The requirements for sustainable and efficient data storage are constantly growing. This is due to our increasing usage of digital data, for example as a basis for strategic decisions. The PEARL DNA project has ambitious plans for the development of new data storage systems. It is not only a success story, but also a prime example of successful cooperation and forward-looking innovation.

The beginnings

In May 2021, BioSistemika attracted attention beyond the research field of DNA data storage with the EU-funded DATANA project. The positive response coupled with the high innovation potential encouraged the BioSistemika team to see DATANA as an impetus for further research and development. Their vision: a revolution in digital data storage. This gave rise to the international and interdisciplinary PEARL DNA project, which aims to find a sustainable and cost-effective solution to data storage problems.

DNA as a storage medium

PEARL-DNA is an innovative initiative that aims to revolutionise the storage of data. DNA is used as a storage medium due to its longevity and data density (455 EB per gram). The project aims to develop a more environmentally friendly solution for data storage in the form of DNA molecules. Details can be found on the project website www.pearl-dna.eu.

European cooperation

The Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) plays a crucial role in the cooperation of project partners. In order to support and promote projects such as PEARL-DNA, the EEN mediates between companies and research institutions. It has access to the world's largest network of its kind.

The collaboration between BioSistemika and the EEN led to the company's cooperation with the Institute for Information Processing at Leibniz Universität Hannover. In addition to the Slovenian company BioSistemika and two German universities (Leibniz Universität Hannover and TH Wildau), partners from France and Switzerland are also involved in PEARL-DNA, which gives the project a strong international character overall.

BioSistemika and the EEN offer not only a success story, but also a model for companies that want to pave their way to success in a dynamically developing business world.
